This book celebrates the British artist, Francis Bacon, whose unsettling portraits influenced the genre of figurative painting in the twentieth century. Throughout his career Bacon was intrigued by the theme of the relationship between two people, both physical and psychological.
Some portrayals embody a complex visual in which male and female body traits interchange or merge. A wide array of the works in Couplings were inspired by Bacon's own frantic relationships.
This book also features an introductory text by Richard Calvocoressi; a new essay and plate texts by Martin Harrison; and a never-before-published interview with Bacon by Richard Francis and Ian Morrison; as well as studio archives and working documents that bring to life Bacon's process.
