Chunky knits, cool slogan tees and corduroy coordinated sets make up the Mustique selection at Vasquiat. These winter staples will complete any wardrobe lacking colour and taste, ensuring a sunny outlook even if the skies are grey.
Mustique is a Lisbon-based, Portuguese fashion brand, founded by two childhood friends - Vera Caldeira and Pedro Ferraz. Inspiration for the must-have collections reflect the duo’s interests and things they love while embodying the vibrant energy of their home. The designs are laid back as much they are chic and quite frankly, irresistible. We had the chance to catch up with Vera and Pedro to find out more.
VASQUIATHow was the Mustique brand born?
MUSTIQUEPedro had recently finished his masters degree and I was transitioning out of a job in London when we decided to travel to Asia together for a couple of weeks. Pedro had wanted to start a project of his own for some time and he pitched me the idea of joining him on the adventure. We started off looking for factories and suppliers to work with in Cambodia, then tried and failed in Thailand, and finally ended up booking a ticket to India following the advice of a dear friend we made on the trip and who encouraged us to try our luck there. We fell in love with the art of ‘block printing’ and were inspired by the artisans who used this ancient technique to create wonderfully complex patterns on different textiles, and decided to create a small collection of 'block printed' shirts with the aim of supporting this art and sharing it with our friends back home in Portugal. We launched our first collection in the summer of 2018 and the brand has continued to grow and reinvent itself ever since.
VWhere do you find the inspiration for your collections?
MWe get asked this question very often and it’s not an easy one to answer… Inspiration comes from everywhere and everything we surround ourselves with. We get inspired by films, music, literature… Visiting an art gallery, spending time in nature, seeing the architecture in a city for the first time. I like to think of Mustique as a reflection of our interests and of the things that we love.

VThe selection at Vasquiat includes a diverse range of materials including, knit, chorodory and cotton. How do you decide on the textiles to include in your collections?
MOne of our favourite parts of having a fashion brand is spending time visiting suppliers and learning about new materials that we can include in our collections. We always prefer to opt for textiles that are made from natural fibres because they’re more comfortable, last longer, and are less polluting to the environment. Our general rule of thumb is if a fabric feels good, looks good, and if we can trace the materials that make it back to the earth then we are usually excited to explore how it can be used to make cool clothes. Tencel, cotton, and linen blends are some of our favourite textiles to work with.

V You are a Lisbon-based, Portuguse brand. How much influence do your surroundings and herritage have on the brand identity and the designs?
MLisbon really is our favourite city in the world and a huge source of inspiration for us. The endless kilometres of beaches surrounding the city, a buzzing art scene, and an abundance of talented people flowing in from all corners of the world all contribute to Lisbon’s great energy. I like to think that this energy is reflected in our designs – we make clothes that we want to wear every day, that can be dressed up or down, that are equal part comfy and laid back as they are chic.
VWhat are Mustique's 2022 resolutions?
MTo keep getting inspired to make the brand grow by expanding and reinventing our product line, and continue to collaborate with different artists and creatives on limited edition pieces. We’d love to open a new store in Portugal and to expand further internationally as well. We’re super happy to have become a part of the Vasquiat family and can’t wait to see what’s next :)
