VIn what way has the local culture and traditions of Uruguay influenced your designs? In which pieces at Vasquiat can we see this the most?
MANDINGA Our culture is reflected the most in the knitted and footwear items. Knitting is something we have seen around us since we were kids. Our mother used to knit us every sweater with pure wool creating different designs on them. We saw the process of knitting since its very origin, watching how wool was obtained from the sheep on our farm. We were part of it. Exploring the beauty of making fabrics or pieces from a thread of wool, has therefore always been in our minds. Local traditions can also be seen in the leather shoes which are made by artisans, a traditional material from our culture. Our prints are one of the defining traits of our brand, and most of them are inspired by our painters, sculptors, and nature.
VThe Aw21 collection features many fun and cosy knitwear designs. Do you predict that after the pandemic comfort will be a bigger priority for all?
MWell, there was a comfy-line trend for this year. However, comfort is something we’ve always emphasised in our garments from the beginning. It doesn't matter if we are talking about a cocktail dress or a denim piece, we think people always look their best if they feel comfortable in their clothes.

VCan you tell us some more about the themes that run through the AW21 collection?
MThis year we started expanding around the world. Motion, movement, action was what we’ve experienced, so we expressed it in our collection. The other theme is versatility, all kinds of pieces are thought to be used for every day, being flexible to every moment of your life.
VWhat inspires all the brilliant abstract prints and patterns?
MThe optical and digital influences with a retro mood were definitely the main elements that inspired us.
VWhat are your favourite pieces in the selection at Vasquiat?
MOh, such a difficult question! I would have to say the Palo pant, the Copenhague boots, the Who coat, the Kira shirts and the Abacus wave knitted jumpers.
